More about Saint Catherine of Siena
She was barely twenty years old when she began preaching about the faith. And she was quite loud about it, too. Yes, Catherine was definitely outspoken when it came to matters of the faith. That's why she became a guiding light to the people of her time, and is the only layperson to date to be named a Doctor of the Church!

*Saints are traditionally associated with certain symbols. This helps us get to know them! (Plus, the symbols in our holy portraits prompt fun, teachable moments about these heavenly friends when you're praying with your children!)

First, if you wonder why we picture St. Catherine wearing a habit if she was a layperson, it's because in her day third-order Dominicans were allowed to wear the habits of Dominican Sisters. And they could live at home. St. Catherine did both. Living in the real world gave her a unique perspective and knowledge with which to serve God.

Take a peek at the other meaningful symbols we added to St. Catherine's Prayer Pillowcase portrait:

😇 Crown of Thorns
This represents the vision St. Catherine had when she was 28.

In it, Christ visited her with two crowns to choose from, and a question: “Will you wear the crown of thorns while you live here on earth and have the crown of precious stones in eternity; or will you have the crown of precious stones here on earth—but then you must wear the crown of thorns hereafter?”
St. Catherine claimed the crown of thorns without hesitating.

😇 Lilies
White lilies have been used to signify love, purity and virginity since biblical times.

St. Catherine was seven years old when she consecrated her virginity to Christ. She was 16 when she became a third order Dominican and renewed that promise.

😇 The Stigmata
St. Catherine was known for going into trances and states of ecstasy when she prayed. Afterwards the mystic would share wondrous stories of her encounters with Jesus, Mary, and St. Dominic.

Once, after Mass in Pisa, she fell into a trance, praying in front of the crucifix. Jesus came to St. Catherine during this powerful experience and presented his wounds to her. The stigmata, which only Catherine could see, became visible to everyone when she died at age 33.

😇 A Book
Books are traditional symbols of the Gospel, knowledge and authorship.

Here the book represents St. Catherine's profound theological writings, which were a big part of the saint being named a Doctor of the Church.

😇 A Ship
We used the ship to represent St. Catherine’s devotion to the Church AND her persuasive pleas that brought Pope Gregory back across the sea to Rome from France.

Harking back to Noah’s Ark, when all outside of the ark were destroyed, a ship is commonly used as a symbol of the Church. Surprisingly or not, the main part of a church's interior, is called a "nave," from the Latin "navis" or ship.

Saint Catherine was a guiding light to people in her time. Our Saint Catherine's Constant Prayer to the Precious Blood of Christ Prayer Pillowcase is a lovely reminder that she is here for us, too!
