The Anima Christi - Latin for “Soul of Christ”- is a much loved, centuries-old Catholic prayer. It's been embraced by many generations of the faithful in their desire to grow closer to Christ. The author remains a mystery but it was showing up in prayer books as early as the 14th century. Then St. Ignatius of Loyola (who founded the Jesuits in the 16th century) was so deeply moved by the Anima Christi that he featured it in his classic work Spiritual Exercises, making it even more popular.

The Anima Christi:
Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, inebriate me.
Water from the side of Christ, wash me.
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O Good Jesus, hear me.
Within Your wounds hide me.
Separated from You, let me never be.
From the evil one protect me.
At the hour of my death, call me.
And close to You bid me,
that with all Your saints
I may be praising you forever and ever. Amen
